Week 1 Marathon Training Recap #HouMarathon

If you didn't see my announcement on Facebook or Twitter several weeks ago, I put my name in for the lottery of the Chevron Houston Marathon. Now I did this thinking that they most likely would not choose me since 1- I have never run a marathon and 2- I am not very fast... Well guess what??!! I was chosen..

I got the email and just about fainted. Now I did have a goal to complete one marathon... in a couple of years... when both kids were in school full time.... Not really within the next 6 months.... But ready or not here we go.

Now I haven't run much since my last half marathon, so to say I am out of shape is an understatement. I did start working with a personal trainer this summer so she has helped with my muscle development and getting my core strengthened. But I haven't really been doing any cardio because I hate doing it when it is hot. I don't do well getting hot. But I have got to start somewhere because I have 6 months now to get ready for this marathon... 26.2 miles....

I have walked a couple of miles here and there on the treadmill, but not much as far as running yet. Especially this last week, my energy levels have been rather low so it is all I can do to just get through the day. I did have my two one hour workouts with my trainer, so I am glad that I did that. I had plans to walk/run a couple of other days, but it just didn't happen.

An extra workout of steam cleaning my whole van in the middle of the day in Texas. Great way to sweat it out!!

My plan for next week is two days with my trainer, and at least two days on either the treadmill or an outside run. Both kids will be at VBS in the mornings, so that may give me the boost I need to get outside and do something. It will most likely only be a walk because it is too darn hot in Texas right now even in the mornings.

My goal is to update every week with my training to help keep me accountable and so you can see my progress to the big finale in January!!

Great Clips Giving Back to Teachers with AdoptAC #GreatList

Thanks to Great Clips for sponsoring this post. My heart for teachers and the opinions in this post are my own :)

Having several friends that are teachers, I have heard them time and again tell me how they are having to use their own money to buy supplies for their classroom. They just don't get enough through the school systems to cover even some of the essentials that they need and they want to make sure that the kids they are teaching are getting the most they can out of the classroom. And teachers sure aren't paid enough most of the time to really be able to afford to buy so many supplies out of their own pocket.

Great Clips wants to change that. They have partnered with AdoptaClassroom.org to help teachers all over the country. Just look at the video of two teachers that they have already helped. Then download their check in app. For every download, they will donate up to $20,000 to help teachers get the needed supplies for their classrooms so that they can focus on teaching the kids and not where they will find the money to get their supplies for the year. (Now until Spetember 5, 2014)

We can do so much as a community to really help our teachers out. One thing that our school did was on teacher appreciation week, instead of gifts she may not really need, we sent school supplies to help replenish her classroom. I also like to send "gift" bundles throughout the year of supplies that I pick up either at the beginning of the year when things are on super sale, or get a few things when I go out to the store. Ask your child's teachers what they really need. You never know how much it will make their day knowing that you care.

What is even cooler is that you can possibly win your school supply list(up to $100) by uploading it to their contest. And when you do that you will receive a $2 off coupon for your next haircut. They will be having some great back to school specials so take advantage of it before your kids start back. Contest ends 9/5/14, winners are chosen daily!!!

So watch the Great Clips video, download the Check-In App, then upload your list to the contest!!

Good2Grow Juice Review

My kids love to drink juice, but I try to limit their consumption of it to one or two servings a day. So when I give them juice, I want it to be one that is not filled with extras like sugar or HFCS. So when I was sent some Good2Grow juice from Moms Meet, I was pretty excited when I read the ingredient list.

Good2Grow comes in 6 different varieties that you can find at most major retailers and grocery stores. They contain no artificial colors, flavors, HFCS, or preservatives. This means your child is getting just what you want them to get..JUICE..They also offer two v-blends, so if you have kids like mine that don't eat their veggies much, then you can get some in them by just drinking juice.

My kids loved all the different bottle toppers with their favorite characters like Disney princesses, Hello Kitty, Marvel, Pixar and more. What is even better is that the lids are spill proof. You can't say that about most  juice containers. They are portable and reusable so you have less waste than you would with traditional juice boxes and pouches. No spills makes for a happy momma and less times that I have to clean their car seats from juice getting squeezed everywhere.

My daughters favorite is the apple juice. She likes the simple clean flavor of it and who wouldn't love the Hello Kitty and Princess lid. My son enjoyed the Topical Fruit Medley V-Blend. He chose Scooby Doo for his lid. I like that they are reasonably priced with the refill packs ranging from $2.99-$3.49 for a 6 pack.

Ockerman Vacation 2014- Destin, FL Day 4~ Plus a Giveaway

Our last full day in Destin, Fl started out rainy. We were pretty tired from all the traveling, going to the beach, then a day at Big Kahuna's Water Park, so the rainy morning was a good break for us. A friend of ours had told us that there was a bowling alley nearby. the kids had never been bowling, so it would be a fun new experience for the whole family and perfect indoor fun.

My husband set up our names then we got to bowling. What was cool is that the bumpers went up and down depending upon who was bowling. So even though mommy and daddy could have used the bumpers, they weren't up the whole time. Little Miss was only interested in playing for a short time since the ball was a little heavy for her to lift and throw properly, but mommy helped her get a few spares and strikes :) I wound up winning both games..haha

The weather started to clear later in the afternoon, but my son started to run a fever. My husband stayed with him while my daughter and I spent a few hours at the pool. Since it was a smaller complex that we stayed in, but that did have several pools, we had it to ourselves most of the time.

I wish we had one more day to go to the beach, but we were going to be leaving early the next morning to head to my extended family in Arkansas for my cousins wedding. Overall we had a lot of fun in Destin and though the drive is a bit far for us, it was still within reason and we enjoyed all there was to do there.

We spent the next couple of days with my family exploring the mountain where my Aunt lives, going to a wedding, then just some good family conversation and memories. I love going to Arkansas and we sure don't get there nearly as often as I would like :)

Planes: Fire and Rescue Movie Review #FireandRescue

Our family has been a fan from the get go of movies like Cars and now Planes. They are on constant repeat at our house and I am ok with that :) Well, they have done it again and released Planes: Fire and Rescue.

“Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a new adventure-comedy about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire. When world-famous air racer Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. Dusty joins forces with veteran fire-and-rescue helicopter Blade Ranger (voice of Ed Harris) and his courageous team, including spirited air tanker Dipper (voice of Julie Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (voice of Wes Studi), ex-military transport Cabbie (voice of Captain Dale Dye) and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero. Directed by Bobs Gannaway (“Secret of the Wings”) and produced by Ferrell Barron (“The Fox and the Hound 2”), “Planes: Fire & Rescue” hits theaters in 3D on July 18, 2014.

What we thought:

My kids were flying with Dusty from the beginning. They loved watching it in 3D. It makes you feel as though you are flying in the air and really soaring through the sky. Now I am not going to go in to specific details of the movie, because hey you need to see it for yourself.. But.. You will be kept amused by some really funny one liners all throughout the movie. I like that this isn't just a funny movie, it is more on the serious side and will teach your kids how amazing it is to be brave and what firefighters go through on a daily basis to keep us safe even when they don't always have the most up to date technology and funding that they need. I like that it also teaches that we need to step outside our comfort zone at times, do something and be someone that we never thought we would. Sure the big career and fame might be great, but doing something that takes bravery and can help save your friends and family is what is needed.

“Life doesn’t always go the way you expect it. But you came here to become a firefighter. If you give up today, think of all the lives you won’t save tomorrow.”
— Blade Ranger, “Planes: Fire & Rescue”

We really loved the characters introduced in this movie and loved how they were not just silly and superficial like some movies can be. Awesome movie and I highly recommend you go and see it! Adults will love it just as much as the kids did!
